Trash cans. Everyone has them in their home. Sometimes they can be as simple as a small Dollar Store can that only holds a small shopping bag worth of garbage. Sometimes they can be pretty elaborate and include odor blockers, lids, and other nifty little features. In this article, we are going to talk about the Rubbermaid Step On Waste Basket Trash Can.
We’re going to be talking about the can itself, some of its technical specifications, and then we’re going to look at what other people who have purchased it had to say about the trashcan. Finally, we will take all these things into consideration and give you our recommendation if this trash can is worth the garbage you want to throw in it.
Without further ado, let’s get started!
Rubbermaid has been around for almost 80 years, and in that time, they have made quite a name for themselves. The company works hard to make home life a little simpler, thanks to their durable housewares that can be found all over the country. The Rubbermaid brand continues to be a trusted name for affordable, durable and innovative products that improve their customers lives.
Case in point, this particular garbage can is retails at just under $30. When you are using the trashcan, the bag fits neatly inside, thanks to the snap-in hinges that are around the oval opening. Some notable features of this garbage can include:
Because this garbage can features a hands-free lid/pedal mechanism, you can throw things away without getting germs and bacteria on your hands from whatever garbage has been thrown out.
Speaking of the pedal/lid mechanism, this feature prevents the lid from flying up too quickly when you step on the pedal, unlike other trashcans where this can be a problem. Also, this mechanism prevents the lid from slamming back down onto the trashcan, so you don’t have to worry about startling anyone who is in close proximity because of a loud bang.
Of the design of the can, it is your standard design, nothing flashy. You can choose between a black or gray option, and the silver foot pedal is a nice touch, but that’s about as far as style goes. Also, you’ll probably want to remove the large Rubbermaid sticker from the side of the trashcan, especially if the can is going to be out in the open and the sticker will clearly be visible.
When you think about garbage cans, you probably don’t assume that there is much to like or dislike. So it may surprise you that people do leave ratings and have things to comment on. For example, when we looked at the customer reviews for this garbage can, 81% of customers left 4 or 5-star reviews.
Of these positive reviews, many customers felt that it was the “perfect trash can” for their small space. The customers like that the lid snaps onto the can and since the trash can is made of plastic, it isn’t noisy when the lid hits a counter or comes back down onto the trash can. They also said that the bag holding clamps around the edge are a great feature because the bags stays put, regardless how full the bag becomes.
With the positives, we must also mention that 19% of customers had less than positive things to say and they left 3-star or below reviews.
Of these reviews, customers felt that the garbage can was a waste of their money. Some customers have said that the pedal mechanism must be pressed on quite hard in order to get the lid to lift up. One customer even said when they do step on the pedal, the lid flies up violently and they worry about the lid marking their walls or counters.
Other customers have said the lid comes off completely when they try to open the garbage can, while others have said that their lid doesn’t fit the can and the pedal is completely useless. One other customer stated that they had to tie the garbage bag to the can because the bag holding device didn’t work and it broke when they took a full bag of garbage out. They said the can now acts like a regular run of the mill garbage can with a lid.
It is surprising to read that there were so many complaints about a garbage can. With 19% of customers who purchased this can saying that it was a bad purchase, we feel that maybe there is some merit to their complaints. However, since it is a small portion of customers, we feel that perhaps the problem is more of user error or a fluke problem with their specific can, rather than it being the standard for all Rubbermaid trash cans.
We feel that for just under $30 and with 81% of positive reviews, this is a garbage can that you may want to consider. Its compact size is great for dorm rooms, craft rooms, and in the kitchen of a small family. We don’t really recommend this garbage can for large families because it does only hold 13-gallons worth of garbage and you may be liable to take out the garbage several times a week, depending on how much garbage your family accumulates!
Either way, we feel this is a great garbage can and you won’t feel like you’re throwing your money away by purchasing it!
